What's Old is New Again

A client contacted me a few months ago and asked if I could take her husband's clergy stoles and make three wall hangings for her children. Her husband was a Lutheran pastor in Texas, and had been to Africa twice for mission work. He had passed away 10 years ago. I was very excited about this opportunity.

The photos below catalog the steps I took to create the "tapestries" (click on the first photo to view as slideshow with captions). I did add some of my own appliqued designs; Africa, Texas, descending dove and flames, the Luther Rose. I also decided that a window shape would be appropriate and used extra fabrics to represent stained glass. I chose a gradated batik for the border, moving from dark at the bottom, to light at the top. A beautiful project; a lovely way to showcase old stoles and preserve memories!
